£4.6 billion per year spent on avoidable staff sickness absence

A striking report from Policy Exchange this week highlights the scale of the NHS workforce challenge.

With NHS sickness absence now reported at almost three times the private sector average, the impact on productivity, finances and patient care is becoming increasingly clear.

Much of the discussion will understandably focus on absence management. However, equal attention should be paid to prevention.

Whatever your view on the proposed reforms, absence management can only ever deal with the consequence.

Prevention has to be part of the answer.

If we want to reduce burnout, sickness absence and attrition, we must better understand what drives resilience, psychological safety, motivation and engagement in the first place.
